The Emerging Angel
This painting is a homage to Jean Ducamps (1600–1648), a Flemish Baroque painter, and particularly to his work Allegory of Virtuous Love. Inspired by Ducamps’ deep and dramatic colors, reminiscent of the Caravaggesque tradition, the painting was created using the paranoiac-critical method, where improvisation and artistic gestures take center stage. During its creation, a figure emerged spontaneously, which was later interpreted as an angel.
“The emerging Angel”” represents a figure in becoming, an entity not yet fully formed. It symbolizes lost innocence, or perhaps innocence still searching for an identity. The angel appears suspended between past and present, between what it was and what it could become. With its aura still undefined, this angel reflects duality: purity and naivety on one side, and the awareness that maturity brings on the other.
The warm, metallic colors—gold and bronze blending into black and white—create an atmosphere evoking the mystery and pathos of Baroque art. The composition, with its fluid texture and dramatic contrasts, suggests a sense of movement and transformation, hinting at the constant flow and change of things.
This painting is not just a tribute to Ducamps but also a personal exploration of the concept of growth, loss, and transformation. The “rock” angel, with its incompleteness, becomes a symbol of the human condition, always teetering between innocence and experience, between what has been and what will be.
